Differences in MEDC's and LEDC's
Volcanoes
There were many differences in destruction for the Mount St Helens eruption and the Mount Pinatubo eruption. One notable difference was housing; in the Mount Pinatubo eruption, around 75,000 houses were destroyed. Whereas in the Mount St Helens eruption, only 250 houses were destroyed. There are many reasons for this. Firstly, as a LEDC, the country is overcrowded, due to poverty and the need for children to work on the farms. Because of this, housing too is overcrowded, and so people will live anywhere that can provide shelter, like volcanoes. Also, there is a need for food in the Philippines. People live near volcanoes to use the soil fertilized by the volcanic ash to grow their crops. They do not mind the risks involved as long as they get plenty of food and shelter. This is contrasted to the USA, where they get their food from other countries, and are not as reliant on growing their own food as the Philippines, because most people in MEDC's have jobs in the city. For the USA, the need for food is not enough to risk living near volcanoes (because they can easily get it from the local supermarkets), so the area around Mount St Helens is mostly used for game (hunting animals). So more people live near volcanoes in the Philippines because of the need to grow their own crops. This is why more houses were destroyed in the Philippines than in the USA. Another difference is in destruction was diseases and deaths. The Mount Pinatubo eruption killed more people due to higher population density. Many people lived near Mount Pinatubo due to their reliance on the crops they grow. This is contrasted to the Mount St Helens eruption, where almost no one lived in this area because many people preferred to live in cities opposing to the countryside. Also, the Mount Pinatubo eruption indirectly caused the deaths of many people (600) due to the poor hygiene in the refugee camps set up to house the victims of the eruption. Due to thousands of people living together without good sanitation, many people died due to malaria, chicken pox and diarrhea.
