Volcanoes
Introduction
On May 18th 1980, America witnessed its largest ever eruption in the history of the United States, killing 57 people and causing around $2.74 billion in damage (U.S). Mount St Helens is located in the state of Washington and is part of the Cascade Mountain Range. America is a MEDC, which stands for More Economically Developed Country. Countries with more resources, salaries and housing accessibility's are MEDC’s. A MEDC typically will have a lower birth rate and also a low death rate due to advanced medical technology. They also tend to have a low young dependant (0-16) population and high elderly (65+) population. Mount St Helens is a Stratovolcano, which means it has steep slopes, built of layers of lava, tephra, pumice and volcanic ash and will often suffer from explosive eruptions. |
Introduction
Prior to the 1991 eruption, Mount Pinatubo had not erupted since 1380. On June 9th 1991, sulphur dioxide started escaping Mount Pinatubo. Soon afterwards, ash started erupting from the volcano. 6 people were killed by the eruption, and 70 more died from the lahars (a mudflow of water and rock debris). Mount Pinatubo is located in the north west of the Philippines. The Philippines is a LEDC, which stands for Less Economically Developed Country. LEDC’s are basically the opposite of MEDC’s. Countries with less resources, salaries and housing are LEDC’s. A LEDC typically have a much higher birth rate (due to a lack of education) and a higher death rate, due to the abundance of diseases. They have a high young dependant (0-16) population and a low elderly (65+) population. Mount Pinatubo is also a Stratovolcano, which means it typically has steep slopes, built of layers of lava, tephra, pumice and volcanic ash and will often suffer from explosive eruptions. |
